September through December Steelhead on the Spey Guide Service offers trips on California’s Trinity River. The Trinity River sees excellent returns of summer and fall steelhead making a great place to swing both dry and wet flies of fresh aggressive steelhead.
The Trinity River is a tributary of the Klamath River and receives spectacular returns of summer, fall, and winter steelhead. In fact, the Trinity might be the only river in California where you can hook a fresh steelhead every month of the year. The Trinity can broken up into three distinct sections of river, the upper, middle, and lower. We focus our efforts on summer/fall fishing on the mid to lower reaches of the Trinity that are well suited to spey/switch rods and swung flies. From December through March the Trinity receives a good run of wild winter steelhead. We like to target these fish in January and February in the lower river.

Steelhead on the Spey Guide Service offers float and walk/wade trips on the Trinity River. We use traditional fly fishing methods, presenting the fly on a down and across swing. The majority of our fishing is done with two handed spey and switch rods with Scandi and Skagit style lines. Most of our summer/fall tips consist of floating line fishing or the use of light sinking poly leaders. Once the weather begins to cool we will switch over to Skagit style lines, sink tips, and larger flies.
Trinity River steelhead trips are great for beginning to advanced anglers. If you are looking to learn to spey cast with a two handed rod, the Trinity River provides a great setting to learn these skills and have a good shot at hooking fish while you learn. The Trinity River is our most popular destination and trips book quickly. Prime time is October through mid November. More Information
