When You Should Fish

The best time for fishing the Klamath River is from September through December. The prime time for fishing on the Klamath is October and November. This is the best time to fish floating lines and wet flies. December can offer some great fishing but we tend to have to use sinking poly leaders and sink tips.

The best time for fishing on the Trinity is September through March. Prime summer/fall steelheading is late September through mid November. Winter fishing on the Trinity is best in January and February. If you have any other questions about dates or the best time to fish, please call.

What To Expect

Fall in California is one of the best times of year to go fishing. Not only is the weather cooling but the colors are starting to change and fish are entering the rivers. September offers warm temperatures in both the Klamath and Trinity Valley’s. Be prepared for cool mornings and warm afternoons.  In october the weather cools off a bit more and most mornings are frosty. As the days pass be prepared for rain which is usually welcome by this time of year and can help the fishing a bit. November is when we really start to see decent amounts of rain. Freezing mornings and highs in the 50’s are common. On all trips it is best to layer your clothing accordingly and be prepared to shed layers as the day progresses.

As for fishing, we are looking for a couple of grabs per day. This means that there is the possibility of not hooking a fish, but also the possibility of hooking four or five. In the fall months both the Klamath and Trinity see good numbers of half pound steelhead. On the Klamath it is not uncommon to hook 6-10 halfpounders and an adult or two each day.

Where To Stay

When fishing the Klamath River we base most of our trips out of the towns of Orleans and Happy Camp. On the Trinity River we fish from around Big Bar down to the mouth at Weitchipec. The best places to stay when fishing the Trinity are around Weaverville, Big Bar, and Willow Creek. As your trip nears we will let you know the towns and best places to stay so you can book a room.
