When You Should Fish
The best time for fishing California's North Coast Rivers is from December through March. If you have any other questions about dates or the best time to fish, please call.
What To Expect
Winter weather in Northern California can be extremely unpredictable. We can see everything from snow to mid 60 degree temperatures on any given day. That being said, the average temperature from December to March is a low around 30 and highs in the high 40’s to low 50’s. Always be prepared for rain and cooler weather. Layer your clothing appropriately and you will be comfortable in any situation.
As for fishing, steelhead fishing is by no means a numbers game, especially swinging flies. We are winter steelheading which is usually tougher than summer/fall steelheading. Again, we are looking for a grab a day. This means that there is the possibility of not hooking a fish, but also the possibility of hooking three or four.
Where To Stay
The city of Eureka is centrally located for most of the rivers we fish on California’s North Coast. Depending upon where we are fishing, there are other towns that are much closer to where we might be fishing. Garberville is the nearest town when fishing the S.F. Eel River. Fortuna is the nearest town when fishing the Van Duzen and Eel River. Arcata is the nearest town when fishing the Mad River. For more lodging information click here.
